The Eisner Nominated Traveling to Mars has many fans, one among them is Patton Oswalt, the comedian, writer, and actor on show's like Netflix’s Sandman, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, and Manhunt.  He has agreed to write the introduction to the collection and the following is an excerpt from it:

Traveling to Mars can stand shoulder to shoulder with any number of sad, beautiful early 70s movies like Cisco Pike, The Rain People, Two Lane Blacktop and Five Easy Pieces – except it’s set in space. Roy Livingston, the protagonist – a former pet store owner dying inexorably of cancer – is about to be the first man to set foot on Mars. All, of course, under corporate aegis and potential profitability. He’s Jack Nicholson in the oil fields, a nameless cog in the gush of petro-dollars that he’ll never benefit from. He’s Kris Kristofferson, selling weed at gunpoint to benefit crooked cop Gene Hackman, only Hackman’s character is equally a victim of the machine, and even more helpless. He’s every holy fool who ever made the ultimate mistake of trying to earn an honest dollar without doing harm to anyone around him – the perfect, disposable mark for a rapacious, corporate monolith hungry to exploit a virgin red planet.

I write so many introductions for books and comics and DVD releases that amount to, “I can’t say too much about this because I don’t want to spoil the surprises you’re about to experience.” And guess what? This is one of them. You’re about to take an interstellar journey that will seem hopeless until it's suddenly hilarious, bleak until it’s blissful, and sad until it’s silly.
